- I met a guy on SRK who lives in Toronto (I tihnk) and plays AH3.  His id is RZGZ.  I'm going to link him here so that maybe he can get in on some Toronto casuals or something in the future.

Hi there,

I realize I'm super late, but it's better late than never.

AH3 is my favourite game out there at the moment and I work down the street from A&C.  I've been there a couple times but didn't really find too many people playing games I enjoy.  I'm out of the Blazblue loop until the next one comes and Marvel is just kinda retarded sometimes.

I hesitated coming here since A&C would be my main place to play, and I didn't see any AH3 there.  Anyway now that I know there are actually players I'd love to join in.  I can stop by after work almost any week day, I finish at 6:00.

I've only really played online so I'm not sure how to guage if I'm actually any good.  I play Fiona/Luck and I'm looking for a sub character.

So are Tuesdays the day to be at A&C for AH3? Seems like it's usually too busy to get a niche setup on Wednesday.

Believe it or not we always have a player bring his own console on Wednesday and set up Arcana for basically the whole day. Things were messed up last time by the AE invite but other wise its always out there for a while. A&C and TTT is planning another day for a mashup, but this one's for less mainstream games. Ppl seem to like Tues but some say Sunday so no confirmation yet. I know that Raynex is going to day and I mite be going, but dont know if sum1 is bringing the game unless Hakami is coming with his copy. I asked the owners to dl the game for one console. If ur already close I say go in and check things out for today at least.

Ah, I see.  Unfortunately I can't come today; I didn't bring my stick to work and I have something to I have to do afterwards.  I see A&C includes AH3 on their Wednesday games now so I'll be there from now on.

Glad you're able to get some offline games now, Rob. :)

Ril:  that was just a small sampling of what it means to be Canadian. ;)  But yeah, it's fun chillin' with you whenever we're in the US.  Glad you were able to join us.

Cool to see people had a blast at NEC.

Internet access is pretty spotty where I am, so I won't be around the web much until 2012.  Haven't been able to find anything in the way of an arcade in this town, either.  Kind of sucks, but the food is good and cheap, and the environment is nice (there's a parrot in the hotel garden that whistles songs and catcalls, which is even more awesome than the ducks in the garden of the hotel I stayed at in Jordan *laughs* ), so it's not all bad.  Plus I got to have a funny moment with the DHS officer at customs in Toronto (not as funny as Spooky's from T12, but still funny).

Anyway, y'all keep that scene alive.

I saw the vids you uploaded Bill. Good stuff getting all those videos. Lots of matches I missed during NEC that I'll get to watch.  :)

Also, I saw you mentioned SNES / PSX RPG's... didn't play too many SNES games, but I do remember Chrono Trigger (I'm sure you've played it.... or at least heard of it).  PSX I played the FF's (7-9). Still got all the original discs + FF8 on PS3 hard drive. xD

The Tales series is really good though. Still waiting on Tales of Xillia to get localized. D:

Ernovaku:  glad you could come chill with us for a wihle.  Thanks:  I think the only other Canadians who got into top 3 in any game were MadScientist (in our 2v2 team) and Brice (from Montreal; came 3rd in BB singles).  Hurray for anime games. ;)  Special mention to RDK's (Rae's) team in UMvC3:  they got 4th place, iirc.  I'm looking forward to the next AH/non-mainstream event in Toronto:  make it happen! :)

Azer:  glad to hear things are going well, even if the Mexican KoF army isn't stationed in your area.  We had some "fun times" at the US border this time, as well.

7th:  Thanks.  I've still got the rest of singles and post-singles casuals to process and upload, too.  So Hakami informed me yesterday that many of the Tales games are not localized yet. :(:(:(  Guess I'll play Tales of Phantasia (PSX?) next, and hopefully that'll tide me over until Graces F is localized next year.  Chrono Trigger was the first RPG I ever played and it was fantastic.  I think it's a shame Square didn't make more RPGs like that besides Chrono Cross.  Then I played FF6 and enjoyed it a lot, too.  But the ones I loved the most were Xenogears and Chrono Cross on PSX:  something about those stories hooked me like no other.  In comparison, I found FF7-FF10 to have just "good" stories and the same old FF battle system.

Hakami also mentioned that Tales Studio had to be dissolved last month into Namco Bandai.  Whyyyy?  :slowpoke:  Do Japanese players really prefer to just sit around and mash X/circle during their RPGs? ...Well, I guess that explains the popularity of VNs as well...  :psyduck:

Well, Chrono Trigger was a collaboration between Enix and Square, and Xenogears wasn't developed by Square at all, so in that respect, it isn't really fair to criticize Square for not making more games in their light.

What Hakami said isn't entirely true.  There are 13 "flagship" titles in the series, of the 13, Destiny 2, Rebirth, Innocence, Hearts, and Xillia were not released here (or in the case of Xillia, hasn't been announced as of yet).  Of those 5, two of them are DS titles, and honestly, I didn't think Innocence (at least the original) was that great.  It's possible that Innocence could be localized over here in the Vita remake, and it's possible that Xillia could be released here as well, so that would only leave 3 titles that will probably never see the light of day.  All things considered, that isn't too bad.

Just because a subsidiary was absorbed back into the parent company doesn't necessarily mean that anything will happen to the Tales series.  They are probably doing this to reduce costs, and the greatest effect we may end up seeing is a reduced number of titles released in the future (rather than the blitzkrieg they've done in the last couple of years).  This isn't necessarily a bad thing.  For those that don't know, a subsidiary is a separate company that is either wholly owned, or controlled by a parent company, and thus, even though they are technically a separate company, their assets (and liabilities) are often included in their financial statements.

It is also entirely feasible they are doing this to maximize development resources.

I had no idea all that went on with the Tales studio. I guess as long as they keep making good RPG's, I'll be happy. I wonder how they're doing financially. The studio must have taken a big hit if Namco isn't fully supporting them now? D:

And yeah, FF battle system wasn't too unique, even though every other aspect was amazing. I think that's what hooked me onto Tales so fast (the battle system). I also feel that Square's earlier RPG's were definitely better (like Chrono Trigger and the earlier FF's that I've played). Like even though they still make high quality productions, they've always been lacking something major aspects that are needed to make a good RPG (FF XIII and X-2 come to mind)..... Or they spend their time / resources on mmorpg's which, from what I hear, aren't very good.

Also Daigo, are you sure you're not thinking of another game (like Xenosaga). I remember my friend playing Xenogears years ago, and I'm almost sure it was a Squaresoft game.

My mistake, at the time Xenogears was made, it was made by one of Square's development teams, however a lot of the staff that was a part of Xenogears later left to start up Monolith Software, (now) a subsidiary of Nintendo, that also happened to produce the infamous Xenoblade (Wii) and the Xenosaga series on the PS2.

A lot of people confuse publishers and developers however (for example, Star Ocean was not developed by Enix, it was developed by Tri-Ace), which is what I was trying to clear up.  Technically, Namco-Bandai didn't "develop" the later Tales games either, as Tales Studio, the subsidiary, did.

Subsidiaries aren't necessarily supported by their parent company, for all intents and purposes, they are separate entities, however, control is (ultimately) asserted by the parent company, and since in the (majority) of instances, their earnings are consolidated on a single set of financial statements, the parent company may be concerned on how the subsidiary is doing (this isn't always the case, some subsidiaries exist as a perpetual loss and are kept around for other, strategic reasons).  This is my own speculation since I don't (obviously) have access to internal reports at Namco-Bandai, I assume that the losses suffered by Namco-Bandai (parent) recently (as in the last year or two) could be the cause of this re-structuring as they are looking to cut back costs and utilize their developmental resources more efficiently.  Again, this isn't necessarily the fault of Tales Studio, and again, this doesn't signify any jeopardy in the future of the Tales series.
